This is not a professional outlet. Nobody is paying for it. We are not selling anything. This is a blog about a life lived, and lives do not organize themselves into neat content verticals. Tuesday we might provision a sailboat. Wednesday we might tear apart a Jeep transfer case. Thursday we might write ten thousand words on cyber conflict escalation models. That is not a lack of focus. That is what curiosity looks like when you let it off the leash.
Sydney and I are both wired this way. Between us we have stacked up graduate degrees and advanced education because we like learning for the sake of learning. The thousands of posts on this site exist because we like writing for the sake of writing. The range is the point.
So yes, you might read a piece on bluewater passage planning and then scroll into an analytical framework for nation state intrusion campaigns. If that bothers you, we are not sure what to tell you. Nobody owes you a content strategy. Enjoy the ride.
SVEOTI.NET began as a simple lifestyle blog once called selil.com. Both addresses still lead here, though we retired selil.com after a long and unusual history. The name first appeared online decades ago, and before that it lived on various servers as a catch all directory. We used it for whatever we were doing, reading, or thinking about. There was no theme unless “whatever we feel like” counts as one.
The original “Selil” was not a website but a small boat my family once owned. That boat met an undignified end during a storm. When I later acquired my own vessel, I realized naming it and my online identity after a boat that sank might tempt fate. Karma already has my number.
SVEOTI stands for Sailing Vessel Eoti. We debated “Sailing Yacht” versus “Sailing Vessel” and chose vessel. Eoti is short for “End Of The Internet,” making sveoti.net the “world wide web end of the internet.” It is a geeky pun. In Ionic Greek, “eoti” also means “the essence of” or “to be something,” which sounds more philosophical than it really is.
I put our first web page up when the internet was still new. Since then the site has gone through many changes, from early HTML to more modern systems. It has survived personal upheaval, career changes, and more chapters of life than we expected.
Some posts are gone, lost to old backups or retired on purpose. If you notice gaps, the content is either lost, outdated, or offline for good.
We write what we want, when we want. Topics range from sailing and gardening to politics, travel, cars, friends, and the occasional rant. No guarantees. Sometimes we vanish for months. Readers show up from across the world, which is either flattering or means someone enjoys translating our posts for fun.
We do not expect everyone to agree with us. If you came for the technical posts, we hope you can also tolerate vacation photos. Expect projects, ride stories, sailing logs, garden updates, car snapshots, and whatever else grabs our attention. Stop and listen or keep walking. Either way, we will be here.
