May 21 News on Cyber Warfare (Special: USAF Cyber Command)

Todays news includes information on the new cyber command for the United States Air Force. Over the next month I will be running these as the Air Force Cyber Command comes to fruition. As a side note in the article by Bob Brewin he mentions the documentation package sent out to governors. If Anybody has a copy of that or an “in” at USAF Cyber Command (provisional) please let me know. It is interesting to note in a few of the articles coming out that the new cyber command is about attack not just defend. I do not believe most people have a good idea of what that means. Perhaps something we need to explore further. Cyber Warfare is NOT information assurance and security (sorry NSA/DHS CAEs), and it is not hacking. I’ve kind of always been idealistic and thought of hacking as experimentation. It uses techniques from all those realms and the rest of military theory though.

Now the news.

The private developers are vying with a competing vision from Rep. Carol Shea-Porter, D-N.H., who’s pushing to bring the U.S. Air Force’s Cyber Command to the structure. A military use would trump private developers, but the Air Force hasn’t contacted the Navy. The structure, dating to 1908, features medieval architecture with turrets that give it the appearance of a fortress. Over the years, the Navy expanded the prison several times, and more than 80,000 prisoners spent time there before it closed in 1974.
