I wrote a CERIAS blog post with Dr. Eugene Spafford on the issues surrounding the media and social implications of the exploitation and distribution of images from various celebrities. As an information security researcher I am completely blown away by the horrific treatment of young women by the media. As a forensic investigator and law enforcement officer I see the challenges of identifying, prosecuting, and sentencing such miscreants.
I know that the dark net community is likely circling their wagons and vetting their membership top to bottom. I know that in the same hidden community that hosts such egregious violations of privacy there are advocacy groups to help victims of the same criminal enterprises. The blog post by Dr. Spafford and myself is much more eloquent thanks to his skill in editing. As a former Marine my response invariably is to provide overwhelming, superior fire on target. I lack subtlety.
