Prior to the 2022 Annapolis Sailboat Show I wanted to get out an update on Sailing YouTube channels by the numbers. You can find lots of information about how we got the data on the original post. Sorry for any typos in the following article I did it on my phone.
First let’s talk about the motivation around the current data set. Since I’m NOT a Young Cruiser (I was told so by some of their membership!) and WAS NOT INIVTED to their awards ceremony, and even though I write extensively about channel creator content you know. I was NOT INVITED. Even though they are suggesting this is like all cruising and I AM NOT INVITED. Woe to me… I thought this might be a great idea to put out an update on a select number of statistics. A little strong?
We are seeing the rise of the Sailing Influencer who is all over the social media environment and includes YouTube as but one of the venues. Between Instagram, TikTok and Facebook there are multiple video presentation methods. A few early birds have even started up their own servers and utilize a variety of Social Media Platforms to drive people to their hosted media service. This obviously bypasses censorship. I believe but can not prove through the data that YouTube and Vimeo are still the selected long form video delivery mechanism. The Sailing Influencer is going to be an impact to the marine industry and how social media is presented in general for the foreseeable future.
There are around 175 active YouTube Sailing Channels that have uploaded at least one video in the last six months, have a viewership over 25 subscribers, and are within the bounds of the definition previously stated for YouTube Sailing Channels in previous posts.
There are currently around 142 channels with zero or negative numbers of video uploads from April to September in the data set. In general, these are considered abandoned channels. The creators may have moved to other platforms. Why negative? They can go back and clean up prior videos or delete them. Some of these channels are large There is a variety of reasons, so we won’t go into that here. Also a few channels in six months have exploded primarily due to the use of the YouTube shorts. Overall, there are 425 YouTube channels identifying as sailing within the current data set. The next update will actually be an update to our API and search mechanism based on some feedback we got last time. The channel number changes every month as people delete their channel or change the focus. As an example, somebody who goes from sailing to trawler (looking at you Tula’s Endless Summer and Sailing Doodles) or sailing to van-life (Hello Wynns). The Wynn’s, Ruby Rose, Distant Shores, and a few others left us in quandary over building boats or sailing boats. We included Sampson Boat Company, and personally value refit/rebuild, DIY, so they have remained in the data set. There are 316 channels that have 25 or more subscribers. We only do math on channels over 25. Why 25? Because my wimpy little channel only has 26 subscribers and I wanted to be on the list.

When we check on views there has been some settling out that is likely caused by the deletion of content. Sailing Doodles, Sampson Boat Company (are they really sailing?), both have made respectable gains in viewership. Parlay Revival is next up, but Expedition Evans has had the largest dramatic increase in views. The average growth across all channels is about 7% over the last six months. The median is right at about 6% for growth. You can use that set to see if a channel is outperforming or underperforming within the space of YouTube Sailing Channels.

The top 15 channels are very similar to the previous channel listing. One notable is that Barefoot Sailing shows negative growth in views and has deleted some number of videos. This could be an artifact of how the YouTube API works but it is interesting to see. Another one is Expedition Evans. A 50% growth in subscribers and 77% growth in views is astronomical. We’ll talk about subscriber growth numbers and some general trends in a bit. Another outlier is Sailing Doodles with 61 video uploads. A significant number of them is the shorts uploaded. Also, we get to see other videos that may not be listed. So consider it both good and an artifact of what we can see with the API.

When we look at the videos counts of what seem to be abandoned channels we quickly realize some like Emerald Steel may have deleted significant numbers of videos even as they may be creating more content. Something is going on with how the YouTube API reports on their channel. To be honest we were quite flummoxed and ran the data twice when we saw the negative growth in views. There are some specific known abandoned channels like Sarean and Kittiwake two couples creating content that have since left. Prism who hasn’t been making videos but have a substantial social media presence. They’re also nice people having shared a taxi with them at Annapolis last year. LaLa Libra has a social media presence but has moved on to making families more than making content.
At Annapolis they are going to give an award for “up and coming” YouTube Channel. Going back one year to October 21st, 2021, this is the list of all channels started within the data set. See caveats about the data elsewhere. There is always the possibility your favorite channel is not included due to naming, how they tag, or what is in their description. We’re using a consistent pull mechanism. In the future we’re thinking about allowing channels to add themselves to the data set and see the dashboards for comparison to other channels on growth and retention.

This data set is based on the original data set so we did not add any new channels since April (would break all kinds of comparisions). That does not mean we haven’t got good data. It’s pretty obvious that “Sailing Bye Felicia” is KNOCKING IT OUT OF THE PARK! Congrats to them. Since December of 2021 they’ve produced mid length videos, shorts, and other items growing from a subscriber base of 1220 to 2480 for 50% growth in subscribers and a whopping 90% increase in views.
Removing the erroneous single digit subscribers where in April they were sitting with 1 subscriber and in September they had grown to 20 subscribers would reflect a humongous percentage growth. We can tease out that Expedition Evans is growing like crazy. Alluring Arctic and Sailing One Life are also growing quite quickly.

Views is the “show me the money” moment for a YouTube sailing channel. Consistent production wins this category as you build up a viewership and rise in the algorithm. Sailing By Felicia and Expedition Evans are doing quite well in this category. As subscribers increase there is a direct correlation to views but not because all subscribers watch all views. It’s more of a correlation factor. Last time we did a lot of maths because we were looking for explanatory variables.

Finally, about abandoned channels. I get asked a lot about how many people are creating content on YouTube and what does the abandonment rate of YouTube Sailing Channels look like. You can’t look at 6 months with no videos produced and think to yourself that they are gone forever. However, you can see a lot of channels are clearly no longer producing content and/or reducing the number of videos significantly. As a point my channel is on this list.
The analysis we are doing is going directly to how we’re going to produce content and what we’re going to produce so though we’re on this list this time. We won’t be on it next time. This list reflects around 139 channels with negative or zero videos. If you find yourself on the list and you think you shouldn’t be there as said earlier there are many reasons why it could happen.
